Observium is a network monitoring software written in PHP. It is a cross-platform application and supports all popular operating systems, but this tutorial was written for Debian 9 OS. At the time of writing this tutorial, the latest stable version of Observium is 17.9, and it requires:<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>PHP 5.6 or higher (preferably PHP 7.0), with mbstring, pear, mcrypt, JSON, mysqli and GD PHP extensions enabled. PHP 7.1 is not supported on the current community edition release.<\/li>\n<li>MySQL 5, MariaDB 5 or later<\/li>\n<li>Apache web server 2.2 or higher compiled with mod_rewrite module and AllowOverride set to &#8216;All&#8217; (please note, the default setting for AllowOverride in Apache 2.3.9 and higher is &#8216;None&#8217;).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This install guide assumes that Apache and MySQL\/MariaDB are already installed and configured on your virtual server.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s start with the installation procedure.<\/p>\n<h2>1. Update the System Packages<\/h2>\n<p>Make sure your server Debian 9 OS packages are fully up-to-date:<\/p>\n<pre>apt-get update \r\napt-get upgrade<\/pre>\n<h2>2. Install the Required Packages<\/h2>\n<p>Install the required packages for Observium:<\/p>\n<pre>apt-get install php7.0-cli php7.0-mysql php7.0-mysqli php7.0-gd php7.0-mcrypt php7.0-json php-pear imagemagick snmp fping python-mysqldb subversion whois mtr-tiny ipmitool graphviz rrdtool<\/pre>\n<h2>3.\u00a0Enable Apache Rewrite Module<\/h2>\n<p>Enable Apache rewrite module if it is not already done so:<\/p>\n<pre>a2enmod rewrite<\/pre>\n<h2>4. Restart Apache<\/h2>\n<p>Restart the Apache service for the changes to take effect:<\/p>\n<pre>service apache2 restart<\/pre>\n<h2>5. Install Observium on Debian 9<\/h2>\n<p>Download the latest community version of Observium available at http:\/\/www.observium.org in the \/opt\/ directory on the server:<\/p>\n<pre>cd \/opt\/\r\nwget http:\/\/www.observium.org\/observium-community-latest.tar.gz\r\ntar zxvf observium-community-latest.tar.gz\r\nmv observium \/var\/www\/html\/observium\r\nmkdir -p \/var\/www\/html\/observium\/rrd\r\n        \r\n<\/pre>\n<h2>6.\u00a0Set Proper Ownership of Observium Files<\/h2>\n<p>All files have to be readable by the web server, so set a proper ownership:<\/p>\n<pre>chown www-data:www-data -R \/var\/www\/html\/observium<\/pre>\n<h2>7. Create Database and User<\/h2>\n<p>Create a new MySQL database and user:<\/p>\n<pre>mysql -u root -p\r\nmysql&gt; SET GLOBAL sql_mode='';\r\nmysql&gt; CREATE DATABASE observiumdb;\r\nmysql&gt; CREATE USER 'observiumuser'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'y0uR-pa5sW0rd';\r\nmysql&gt; GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON observiumdb.* TO 'observiumuser'@'localhost';\r\nmysql&gt; FLUSH PRIVILEGES;\r\nmysql&gt; quit<\/pre>\n<p>Do not forget to replace &#8216;y0uR-pa5sW0rd&#8217; with a strong password.<\/p>\n<h2>8.\u00a0Create a New Virtual Host<\/h2>\n<p>Create a new virtual host directive in Apache. For example, create a new Apache configuration file named \u2018observium.conf\u2019 on your virtual server:<\/p>\n<pre>touch \/etc\/apache2\/sites-available\/observium.conf\r\nln -s \/etc\/apache2\/sites-available\/observium.conf \/etc\/apache2\/sites-enabled\/observium.conf\r\nvi \/etc\/apache2\/sites-available\/observium.conf<\/pre>\n<p>Then, add the following lines:<\/p>\n<pre>&lt;VirtualHost *:80&gt;\r\nServerAdmin admin@your-domain.com\r\nDocumentRoot \/var\/www\/html\/observium\/html\r\nServerName your-domain.com\r\nServerAlias www.your-domain.com\r\n &lt;FilesMatch \\.php$&gt;\r\n SetHandler application\/x-httpd-php\r\n &lt;\/FilesMatch&gt;\r\n &lt;Directory \/&gt;\r\n Options FollowSymLinks\r\n AllowOverride None\r\n &lt;\/Directory&gt;\r\n&lt;Directory \/var\/www\/html\/observium\/html&gt;\r\nDirectoryIndex index.php\r\nOptions Indexes FollowSymLinks MultiViews\r\nAllowOverride All\r\nRequire all granted\r\n&lt;\/Directory&gt;\r\nErrorLog \/var\/log\/apache2\/your-domain.com-error_log\r\nCustomLog \/var\/log\/apache2\/your-domain.com-access_log common\r\n&lt;\/VirtualHost&gt;\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>Remove the 000-default.conf file:<\/p>\n<pre>rm \/etc\/apache2\/sites-enabled\/000-default.conf<\/pre>\n<h2>9. Restart Apache Web Server<\/h2>\n<p>Restart the Apache web server for the changes to take effect:<\/p>\n<pre>service apache2 restart<\/pre>\n<h2>10. Create a config.php File<\/h2>\n<p>vi \/var\/www\/html\/observium\/config.php<\/p>\n<p>Add the following lines:<\/p>\n<p>&lt;?php<\/p>\n<p>$config[&#8216;db_extension&#8217;] = &#8216;mysqli&#8217;;<br \/>\n$config[&#8216;db_host&#8217;] = &#8216;localhost&#8217;;<br \/>\n$config[&#8216;db_user&#8217;] = &#8216;observiumuser&#8217;;<br \/>\n$config[&#8216;db_pass&#8217;] = &#8216;y0uR-pa5sW0rd&#8217;;<br \/>\n$config[&#8216;db_name&#8217;] = &#8216;observiumdb&#8217;;<\/p>\n<p>$config[&#8216;snmp&#8217;][&#8216;community&#8217;] = array(&#8220;public&#8221;);<br \/>\n$config[&#8216;auth_mechanism&#8217;] = &#8220;mysql&#8221;;<\/p>\n<p>Then, run the following commands to insert the default schema:<\/p>\n<pre>cd \/var\/www\/html\/observium\/\r\nphp .\/discovery.php -u<\/pre>\n<h2>11. Create a user account<\/h2>\n<p>Create a user account, use level of 10 for admin .e.g.:<\/p>\n<p>.\/adduser.php admin &lt;password&gt; 10<\/p>\n<h2>12.
